Before Sending Funds or Personal Information

Always take the following precautions:

  • Independently verify all payment and wiring instructions
  • Confirm wiring instructions directly with authorized representatives by phone
  • Verify property availability before making any payment
  • Avoid sending any payment without signed, verified documentation
  • Never pay via wire transfer, cryptocurrency, or gift cards without direct confirmation

Common Fraud Schemes

  • Rental Listing Fraud: Fake listings using stolen photos, often priced below market, requiring upfront deposits before a showing.
  • Wire Transfer Fraud: Fraudsters intercept real estate emails and redirect closing funds to unauthorized accounts.
  • Impersonation Scams: Bad actors create fake versions of legitimate real estate websites or impersonate agents.
  • Advance-Fee Fraud: Requests for upfront fees in exchange for guaranteed listings or financing that are never delivered.
